WHAT'S IN A NAME?
The Great Search for a New Name for "People with PTSD"

I was chatting with my friend, artist Glenn Fitzpatrick, and I referred to "people with PTSD" as "PTSDers". Right off, Glenn said, "I don't like that term, it makes it sound like we are defined by PTSD."  I agreed. I only used it because I hate terms like "sufferer", "survivor", or "victim"... and I really hate the terms "patient", or the condition described as a "disease"

So we decided to get a discussion going -- maybe even a contest of sorts to see what "people with PTSD" might like to be called. Vote on the top names we create on a survey online...There's no prize--other than the eternal gratitude of fellow "people of trauma" who would like to be called something else.

Join the discussion! Let's revolutionize the world with a better name, one that is more promising, inclusive, shows us as the strong, resilient individuals we are. A name that doesn't let our past define us, but shows that we've earned our experiences, own them, and that we are in control of our shared condition.

(If someone would like to sponsor a prize or prizes for people who come up with the most popular names, by all means we welcome the support for this endeavor! Contact Colleen Crary at BeFearlessToday@gmail.com )

We're off !    :-D

  1. I know on my darkest days I thought of myself and other PTSD folks as "The Damned"...Sure felt that way...NOW I think of us as "The Awakened"...Not sure if that's a great new name...just getting my creative zone on...

  2. This is a tough one, but I agree that a new term would be helpful and possibly break some of the stigmatization, along with giving us a more posituve self image. The problem is that we don't all share a common experience, so finding an all inclusive label is tough. An EMS worker has not experienced the same things as a combat vet, and neither one share the same experience as the plane crash survivor.

There is one thing that binds us... Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Three of the four words naturally have negative meanings attached to them. It's a daunting tak, but one I hope and pray will be successful.

Many times in the past I could deinitely relate to being the "damned." I can also embrace both of being "awakened" and "born again."

  3. BA...Born Again...SO TRUE! Is as if we give birth to ourselves, a second birth, new life, with all the hurt and agony that act entails. Might be a term that clashes with a certain religion that uses "born again" in an entirely different way....Hmmm...this is a tough one indeed this discussion.
    Susan is right ptsd binds us...1 0f 4 words bind us...hmmm...Post something...Past something...beyond something...

  6. I think "Born Again" will be universally shunned by most sufferers and hence never catch on. No matter how apropriate it is to our use, it is too deeply entrenched witho the Born Again Christians.

I decided to consult the Thesaurus and look for words. Here is the list I came up with after 20 minutes...

    champ
    champion
    winner
    hero
    conqueror
    victor
    vanquisher
bear (as in bear a burden)
    perservere

Maybe this will inspire something from someone.

  8. From my friend and colleauge Ralph Barrera • Having experienced an on-duty police shooting and having taken a human life left me with the knowledge of what trauma really "IS." Hence I like the label "Insight-Specialist (IS). It IS what it IS.
